Maybe you could fly them in atmosphere. And maybe you could intercept an enemy ship or purposely crash into it.

I think you should only be able to fly in the atmosphere, but not into the enemy capital ship, and not up and down. Otherwise you may just land the capital ship and make a huge command post lol. Also if a capital ship gets too close to the other it should be able to be hit by the ships defenses.

I see: Battle start. Jerk gets into pilot seat and immediately rams ship it into the planet/enemy ship. Battle over.

I had a similar idea a while back, where somebody would use the mini-map to mark position for the ship in relation to the enemy ship to get a better shot at key points, or protect vital hardpoints from the enemy. Once the position has been marked, the capitol ship will move itself to the new location. However, there would be a proximity limit to how close you can be to the enemy. Same deal with frigates and support vessels. Control of this feature could be handed out much like Hero control in BFII.

Should the capitol ship be ready to blow anyway, the proximity limit is removed and you can attempt to go Kamikaze on the enemy, but the greatly reduced speed would give them plenty of time to maneuver out of harm's way, provided they caught on to what was happening.

So, giving a single person limited control over the position/movement of capitol ships/frigates - Yes

Letting any random schmuck pilot it like any normal aircraft - No.

Another reason to back this up is that piloting a huge capitol ship may seem like fun, but the ridiculously slow speed and maneuvers of such craft would get boring fast. With the system i described, you can hop into control, make the necessary route/position changes, and return to the fight.

You mean no vertical movement? I think you should be able to vertically move the ship but with certain limits so you can't go too far off in space or collide with the planet's surface (or too close to the surface so you could easily destroy enemies using the ship's turrets).

Not if you blow up their engines. Then again, the speed and movement of the ships are really slow and would take ages to reach the other ship.
Who would crash their ship on the surface?.

:\/: You made us lose the game you jerk!

Who would crash their ship on the surface?.
Same people that strapped bombs to their jeeps and crashed them into buildings in Battlefield.

Same people that set off car alarms just to bring down a crapload of zombies in Left 4 Dead when the entire team already has low health.

Those types.

That seems fair

Anyway, it really gives the game much more freedom or maybe too much. Maybe its best to fly smaller ships like the tantives.

I think it would be cool if it was like a hero option. Person with most points gets to pilot it. What I posted in another topic was you could capture capital ships as an alternative to destroying it, so if you could capture then fly it into something would be awesome!

Too close to the ground? What about anti-air?

Yea so if you fly too close you'll get an anti-air warning and then you can't fly any lower
