I've decided to make a 3D game with OpenGL. I'm reproducing the brass monkey challenge on TimeSplitters Future Perfect, the monkey curling game.
THis will be a mini-game on TimeSplitters Platinum and a standalone game for the iphone.
Here's an early preview. Since this preview, I've fixed the walls, improved the fog, added some more to the gameplay and added some snow (falling snow that is).

I'll add some 3D monkey models and perhaps some trees. I will likely alter the ground to include hills rather than the flat surface.

Not bad so far Matthew.

When I saw the topic title I had to see what was up. I'd like to see the video but will have to wait till I get a chance on a better connection. Hope it works out

Thank you both.
I've almost done for desktop version. I just need to get the monkey model and I may consider adding the other parts I've mentioned.
After that I want to look into making an iphone version. The fee to submit to the app store is $99 which will be about £70 I guess. With a small price on the iphone/ipod touch/ipad version I'm sure I can break-even with that fee.

From personal experience (as a user not a developer) I would suggest not submitting a free version. I have only purchased the full version of a game once as I can usually get my fix from the free version. If there was no free version but the full version was only a buck I would just buy it. It's only a buck. But of course it adds up as more people purchase it.

Jedi Consular

about £62-63 actually. I'm sure you will, but I was wondering will it have high scores? Will you be able to hit monkeys with other monkeys? is there a possibility for a versus mode? I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I'm just tossing ideas around.Matthew wrote: After that I want to look into making an iphone version. There will be 5 monkeys per game. When a monkey hits another monkey, the other monkey will move in response and the former monkey will slow down after impact. It's not 100% precise physics but it is a nice addition.
There will be high scores, both local and online.
A multiplayer mode is interesting. The high scores will add some potential for competitive play. Aren't the high scores enough? People can play one after the other and try to beat each other's scores.
I can't find a royalty free monkey model.
And thank you scott for your advice.
Edit: Now I do see why a multiplayer mode might be good. You can knock each other's monkeys about. I think it might be easy to implement. I'll consider that greatly.

Could there be something similar to halo firefight?

I don't understand what you mean.
They are two completly different games, one involves shooting aliens and large explosions, the other involves sliding monkeys down an ice lane.Legion 2.5 wrote:Could there be something similar to halo firefight?
I have some rendering on the iphone complete at last:

Every time I try to reply my computer gives me the finger and freezes. Not this time... Anyway, the render looks great. I can't wait to see a screen when all the models are finished and in placeMatthew wrote:I have some rendering on the iphone complete at last:

I was thinking about making some relief (different elevation on the ground) but does anyone think it's necessary because a simple square is so much easier. I will likely add a few trees. It shouldn't be too hard to add them on-top of the monkeys as the model loader will already be done for the monkeys.
The fonts are confusing me so I decided to use images for fonts (Images for each digit for scoring as well). The text may not be 100% perfect but I don't think it's looks bad at all.
I can show as screen of the text in a moment...
Also I will try the snow to see if it renders okay on the iphone. I doubt it will be very thick like my wonderful snow on the desktop version.
Here's the iphone version's text (not fully done) - http://godofgod.co.uk/my_files/iphone_curling_text.png
There's more room on the desktop version - http://godofgod.co.uk/my_files/text_desktop_curling.png

I've finally been enrolled on the iOS Developer Programme. I'm downloading the latest SDK (Taking a long time) and once that is installed I can test the game on my new iPhone 4. Hopefully next week at the latest I'll have submitted the game for approval to the app store.
Exciting!
