In Renegade and Elite Squadron had customizable classes, but to me they didn't work out well. The customization wasn't well thought. I want customization in BF3 to the MAAAAAAAXXXXX. I want to upgrade weapons, armor plating, and kill/score points. You can possible earn upgrade points through earning various credits in the game. Also unlock a lightsaber for a customizable jedi/sith class. Post any more ideas about BF3's class system here.
EDIT: I did not notice that one forum about classes here sorry.

I have mixed feelings on the customization option. On the one hand I think it would be cool but on the othr hand I think it could unbalance the game somewhat unless its really well thought through, otherwise we could get an entire team of jet packing, assult rifle with a side arm rocket launcher classes.

To fix this we could say you can chose a primary weapon (from a list) then a secondary weapon (from another less powerful list), your grenades/explosives and then a piece of equipment (like, communications equip (for an airstrike/call in reinforcments), jet pack, heavy armour, extra ammo or health kits, remote control droid ect).

Once you've made your choices, certain restrictions are made on you due to your choices i.e

heavy armour == slower
jet pack == less armour, more vulnerable
Communications kit == less powerful primary weapon

Then of course customize the patterns in your armour etc

That reminds me of Oblivion's customization. I like the idea but I want them to take it to the extreme.

I don't either but I've seen gameplay videos and the characte customization, it's just to original. It's improved a little in Elite Squadron but it needs more improvement.

I thought about something like that at first as well, but I don't think it should be too crazy. The most recognizable things about this armies is their uniformity. Having 16-32 stormtroopers running around with none of them wearing the same thing seems very un-Empireish. Customizing your class kit would be very nice, though.

Yeah it would be. Hopefully if that's in BF3, they will not mess that up.

There are some on gamespot that show a glimpse of the character customization. My main hope for BF3 is that they don't mess it up.

I don't mind customizable classes but liked Tretarn said, it unbalances the game.

I loved how in Renegade Squadron you could go online, select your weapons and abilities in customization to exceed credits, flip the little switch on the top of the psp to disconnect, and have the ultimate class for yourself!!!

Too bad they figured that out in Elite Squadron...

Personally I side more with balance. I agree that it would be fun to have customization, but on the other hand it retracts from what I enjoyed as the core game play of Battlefront. You were a soldier just like everyone else, and the only thing that really distinguished yourself was your skill. I think if they were to have customization it would better if it was more tactical. For example, on ground maps with both vehicles and ships, you could choose between different kinds of rocket launchers, some slow and powerful with a wide blast radius, while others faster weaker and with good homing capacity. I think balance should be a good core focus of the game play.

It would be awesome to be able to unlock different weapons and make all your classes to your own preferences. :!:
