Chris Matthews Message

Post by RattleandHum1988 »

I heard back from Chris Matthews after I sent him a message regarding the recent screenshots that were posted. If you haven't seen them they're right here: http://www.behance.net/gallery/Starwars ... -3/3246397
Here's what my message was:

Hi there,
I just wanted to say I love the artwork you did on the assets for the Battlefront 3 project. I'm looking into getting into game design, and I'm a huge fan of Star Wars as well. The pictures you posted were pretty recent too, does that mean you're still working on the game? I'd love to see some more pictures of your work regarding the project, as well as maybe hear about your experiences working on it!

Thanks a lot, hope to hear back from you,

Alex

And here was his response, super quick!

Hey dude -
Thanks for the message. After Free Radical closed the project was handed to another developer without the game engine (That we owned) to be finished. I understand that company closed before it was completed.

Those images are pretty old and unfortunately for most of us who worked on that game we have very little to show for it now.

Still - almost everyone involved have moved onto bigger and better things. It's a hard industry to be in. Better start getting good fella :)

Chris

Interesting. It seems like he's either referring to Pandemic or Slant Six, both who were rumored to be working on the game after Free Rad. went under. I guess that means CrytekUK aren't making it :( Maybe LucasArts is doing it in-house...If anyone knows anything about game design, how long would it take to create a new engine but with all of the assets still intact? Maybe they're taking so long with it because they want to rebuild the engine that Free Radical was using.

Sounds like it got handed over to Pandemic and then got scrapped when EA shut them down.

Thanks for the info. :u:

Slant Six was rumored to be developing SWBFIV so the game must have been handed to Pandemic.

From what I understand Slant Six was making a game called Battlefront: Online, AFTER Pandemic went under, but then they (slant six) went under as well.

My best guess is that LucasArts is finishing the game in-house and has been since that.

Obsidian Entertainment developed KOTOR II.
Lucasarts made The Force Unleashed (partially), Fracture, Jedi Knights and some of the OOOOLD games everybody knows and nobody plays internally.

I have a feeling that LucasArts might be doing it internally. I remember before all of the Spark hype that's what I thought too, but then all of the evidence pointing to Spark said otherwise. Now that they're out of the way I think that's the most likely possibility again. After the game failing with so many devs (presumably Free Radical, Pandemic, and Slant Six) why the hell would they even bother contracting out the game again? Maybe they just flat out said "We'll get TOR done, and Star Wars Kinect, and then get out studio to work on Battlefront 3". They have nothing on their plate right now (at least publicly) other than maintaining TOR, but I can imagine they have a specialized maintenance team for that at Bioware, not a team of developers at LucasArts. Even if they just showed a cinematic trailer at E3 without gameplay and said "sometime in 2013" I'd be super happy.

Has there been any proof though? I dont think so. I havent seen or heard of them hiring people for a big project like Battlefront 3.

Pages 8 and 9 COULD be (and I'm definitely not saying they are) positions for battlefront. Obviously they could be positions for ANYTHING, but it goes to show that LucasArts has an active internal studio.

Of course they have an active studio, but Battlefront 3 would need a large online infrastructure, you would notice that sort of position being hired for.

Unless they already have the positions filled?

That's not how game development typically works. Especially for a smaller studio that isn't pumping out games all the time. They keep a base staff, and bring people in as needed to fill positions, and ramp up as development ramps up. Lots of people typically are brought in for a certain piece of production, and let go at the end of development.

That is a weird system that I honestly had no clue was how it was. Good point though, we should be seeing a much bigger employment or noticed it previously.
