KOTOR and SWTOR

Post by Noctarchy »

I know that these are both very old games, but, they are two of the most innovative RPGs in the industry, and still have lasting affects on new games. That's what the poll is for.

Just for discussion, what are the thoughts about Bioware going MMO With Star Wars: The Old Republic? The game looks great, and I would get it, but, it's a $60 drop to get the game, and then $17 a month to play it.

I will be shocked if KOTORII gets a vote.

SWTOR looks awesome but I'm not a big fan of MMOs.

These two games are the reason that around Easter every year I find a RPG game and have about a weeks worth of unrelenting gaming.

I liked the first one better because I think the story flowed a bit better and it ended well. Don't get me wrong the Sith Lords was still a nice game but struck me as just "more of the same".

As for the Old republic, I'm not a fan of MMORPGs because they always seem to have me going around and killing a certain number of various animals/monsters/random strangers for a certain number of items for about 90% of my game play time for some cruddy reward which I will only use until the next quest gives me a slightly more powerful version of the same item, which I get very bored of.

I admit I haven't looked into TOR that much yet, so I might be wrong but if it follows the usual MMO formula I doubt I will play it.

Now if there was some sort of FPS ultra realistic survival MMO game with zombies that came out....

You just gave the exact description of World of Warcraft. WoW is inherently one of the worst games of all times. What I don't like is the fact that when people make an MMO, they try and base it off of WoW. That's bad, because World of Warcraft is so linear and offers no freedom. In fact, I wouldn't call it an RPG of any sorts. WoW is an action/adventure game. There is no roleplaying of any sorts.
I like the concept of MMO games, but they don't all have to be RPGs. Take the old game, Freelancer, for example. It's a space shooter, but you can have up to 240 players in one game. More MMOs should simply try to be independent of the "WoW Standard" of gameplay.
But honestly, I love MMOs. The concept and idea of them is great. I just wish there were more good ones. With more Mass Effect like gameplay, minus the constant running back and forth.

Yeah I did just describe WoW didn't I? But it does seem that most MMORPGs follow a similar pattern to WoW....which is a shame.

As for MMOs in general, I'm keeping an eye on a game called Dust 514:

basically the people who play EVE can hire and send people playing the FPS Dust game to fight over planets for them. Could be pretty good if they pull it off.

Let me know when you decide what games you're playing this year. I've been eyeing up Baldur's Gate II but watching gameplay footage has detoured me. I'm all for strategy, but what I saw was just boring.

swtor is a great game, in the beginning it dose have some go find this person, or go kill x amount of people, but when you get farther into the game the story really hits you, almost all of the quests are very story driven the farther into the game you get, although there are the go kill x amount of people still in the game, they all happen in key story points that your going to kill them anyways. swtor defiantly pulled off the lvling system, its not the grinding of wow. one problem is that they do have alot of "go give medicine to these people" style quests, but because you can change how you go about that quest things can end up radically different than someone else who does that quest.

overall great game, great story and lore, go buy it.

p.s. in the game there are 5 sections to every storyline and by the time you reach lvl cap your only at the 3rd or 4th section in the story line. so if your not into the pvp raid endgame and your in it for the story, your still going to have alot to do at lvl 50.

but deffinatly going to get dust, it sounds awesome

Thought both games were fantastic...KOTOR was very innovative and had a great story and i thought KOTORII was the perfect sequel...Im currently waiting to see if SWTOR is coming out with another free trial weekend like i know they've done in the past before i decide to get it, but from what if seen, it looks awesome
