Seeing as this is a Star Wars related forum I'm probably in the minority but I prefer The Lord of the Rings over Star Wars. I was just wondering what your opinions on the matter are. But first let me make my case.(By the way they are both fantasy films, even though Star Wars is also Sci-Fi)
-All 3 Lord of the Ring movies have 18 Academy Awards and 30 nominations combined
All 6 Star Wars movies only have 9 Academy Awards and 24 nominations
-Return of the King alone has 11 wins and 11 nominations, making it the most successful film in Academy Award history.
-Peter Jackson directed all of the trilogy unlike George Lucas who only directed A New Hope (actually he also directed all of the prequels but those suck.)
-AFI (The worlds most prestiges film school) Named Lord of The Rings the 2nd best fantasy movie but Star Wars doesn't show up. Star Wars also doesn't show up for Sci-FI.
-I also expect the upcoming Hobbit films to be incredible.
Let the debating begin.

I have absolutely 0 interest in Lord of the Rings. But at least Peter Jackson was able to make GOOD films.

Really? Not even a bit? They were incredible films.Kelevra wrote:I have absolutely 0 interest in Lord of the Rings. But at least Peter Jackson was able to make GOOD films.
To answer the original question, they are on par with each other and both are close to my heart. I haven't watched either saga for a while but am hoping to get both of them on Blu-Ray. Once I watch them over again (avoiding the prequels most likely) I will come back here to make a final say.

I don't doubt they're good movies. I'm just not not interested in that sort of thing. Same with stuff like WoW, Elder Scrolls, Warhammer, etc, etc.Really? Not even a bit? They were incredible films.

Once again, really? Not even Elder Scrolls? Have you ever given fantasy a chance or do you just not want to be a part of it?Kelevra wrote:...stuff like WoW, Elder Scrolls, Warhammer, etc, etc.

Just not something that's interested me.
It's more or less the same deal with Sci-Fi.
Basically if it goes too far in either direction I'll lose interest. I usually enjoy stuff that's somewhere in the middle of the scale (Fallout, Star Wars OT, Magicka, Command & Conquer, etc)

First off, you can't make an accurate comparison with Fantasy and Sci Fi/Space Fantasy because they're different genres. Second, You can't compare Academy Awards because the guys who nominate them are sell outs, at least in my opinion.(Not too say LOTR didn't deserve what they got, they rightfully did. I'm just saying the good movies never get they're due.) Even if they weren't, Star Wars came in a different time, where Sci Fi stuff NEVER won anything. 1, 2, and 3, while coming out in a post 4, 5, and 6 movie time, didn't deserve any awards, except for the music, but that's because John Williams is the man.(IMO, 1, 2, and 3 didn't stand as much of a chance compared to 4,5, and 6.) It's like comparing Apples and Oranges. Two great products, each with their pro's and con's. But in the end they both give me the same satisfaction.Joelfigbars wrote:Seeing as this is a Star Wars related forum I'm probably in the minority but I prefer The Lord of the Rings over Star Wars. But If I had to chose, I couldn't. They're both too good. I chose both.

I could live without fantasy (sci-fi is better anyhow) but am still surprised that it doesn't interest everyone.Kelevra wrote:Just not something that's interested me.

Star Wars != LoTR (undecided)
To answer the larger question at hand, sci-fi is better than fantasy. But Stars Wars may or may not be better than LoTR.

In film appreciation we often debate whether you can even consider Star Wars Sci-Fi and that it has more elements of Fantasy. There are thousands of websites that discuss this very topic.
You sure about that.Terrabyte20xx wrote: Even if they weren't, Star Wars came in a different time, where Sci Fi stuff NEVER won anything.
(1935) Bride of Frankenstein 1 nominations
(1965) The War Game 1 win

(1971) A Clockwork Orange 4 nominations
(1974) Young Frankenstein 2 nominations

(1982) E.T 4 wins 9 nominations
(1982) Blade Runner 2 nominations
(1985) Back to the Future 1 win 4 nominations

Just to name a few.

But I won't let the Sci Fi one go. Look at all of those. Most of them only won 1 or 2 out of 3 or 4. That's not a lot compared to say, Titanic (Yes, I just brought that piece of crap up.), LOTR, or heck, even The Dark Knight.

So true Dark Knight got so ripped off.

Thats a hard question. I love both trilogies very much and are probably the most epic films ever made(not the Prequels).
Sauron vs the emperor
Stormtroopers vs orcs
Gimli vs Chewbacca
Merry, pippin vs r2, c3po
obi-wan vs Gandalf
Williams score vs Shores score
The list goes on...
I myself like sci-fi more (LOtR is probably the only fantasy movie I like).
In epicness- LOTR
In sci-fi/fantasy terms- Star Wars
I hate that people are afraid of LOTR for some reason.

Is that an ancient tibetan dagger in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
It's because some idiot said that fantasy will fry your brains. It's as bad as people saying video games cause violence.

Jedi Master

The only thing LOTR that I have been interested in was The Hobbit book. I may watch he movie as the book was pretty good. Except for that, I never have seen any of the films or read any other books.
My vote is Star Wars though, I am not into LOTR that much, and I can't figure out why
I guess it's just the blasters and lightsabers in Star Wars that I like so much lol
BTW, I thought #3 was the best out of the prequels. I thought it was a little unexplained at times, and could have been longer, but I liked it. Plus it lead to an awesome game! *cough*Battlefront 2*cough*
Lastly, Star Wars may not have many awards, but it has many fans and comic nerds and such, it's had many TV shows about the making of it, many cartoon versions of the Clone Wars, MANY video games(I think they released like 10 in 1992(?)), etc. So it has had it's attention.
