LucasArts signs multi-year Unreal Engine 3 licensing deal

Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 game development tools just got a new buyer. The company announced today it has signed a multi-year agreement with LucasArts. The agreement is to use Unreal Engine as the basis for "multiple projects" at the developer/publisher. There is no word on which games will use the engine and financial details were not disclosed.

LucasArts has used previous versions of Epic's Unreal Engine before. The most notable use was with LucasArts' Star Wars Repubic Commando tactical shooter which was first released way back in 2005. Rumors of a sequel to that game have popped up on the net from time to time.

Forget about Crytek, looks like Unreal Engine won the battle. Hopefully, they are another step closer.....

Moved...

The Unreal Engine is used for everything so tells little about the game.

Sorry but this has nothing to do with Spark Unlimited.

Well we know the deal has not said anything about Spark, but I also think that it's strange that Spark just so happens to be using the UE3 as well. I say it points to further evidence along with all the other evidence that was easily found through their job descriptions and the game is based aroung a "high-profile science-fiction franchise" etc. I just get more hope all the time.

Even though I believe you, why would Lucas Arts make the announcement after Spark had already said that they would be using the engine for its upcoming game?

Does this mean LA and Epic had made the agreement before Spark described its upcoming game? If so, this would mean that agreement happened last year.

Yeah, the engine doesn't really give many clues as to the game being made. The newest Mortal Kombat game uses Unreal, and it's about as far from a Battlefront-style FPS as you can get.

I would guess that IF Spark is making Battlefront 3, Lucasarts, who would likely be overseeing the production, saw how well the Unreal engine was working for them, and decided to acquire it for themselves for internal development to make more games with it. Extremely wild guess, but hey.

Not really. Lots of people are using UE3 all the time. For handhelds, consoles, PCs, or upcoming hardware (NGP). It doesn't narrow down the options all that much.

Not to forget that new president Paul Meegan was a CEO & Co-Founder at Epic Games China, the owner of the engine.

Republic Commando 2 makes since in this situation considering that Lucas Arts recently hired Tim Longo (the Director of RC1) to be their new 'Creative Director'.
