Making Animated Gifs

Does anyone know how to make them? I know you use GIMP, but I really don't know how and the tutorials I've found are confusing. I really want to make some as an avatar.

Gifs aren't too bad to make with the proper software. Adobe Photoshop or Fireworks is probably the easiest way to do them.

I have GIMP, but are there any good, cheap copies of Photoshop?
