I think that was done on purpose. It's only a couple of critical areas and you really should be checking those spots anyway.

Well I disagree with you on that. A star destroyer has turrets on it's underside for plenty of tactical reasons. Of course a majority of the guns are placed at aboardage points (along the starboard and port of the vessel ) but it doesn't make sense for bombers to be able to hammer the ship on the underside without opposition.

Scott, what would be the problem with putting turrets on the keel?

My problem is that there would be no safe spots for fighters. Between dodging other fighters, turrets, frigates, and small cruisers, there would be nowhere to go that would not involve death. I can just see turret laser spamming at the entrance of the enemy capital ship...

I see your problem, but understand BF2 only had flak guns for the AI turrets. and those didn't exist except in small quantities in the early era. So if they were replaced with lasers, that needed to be precise, and limit the amount of turrets around the entrance-way, or imply the rotational limit of the turrets, and that problem could be solved.

The flak-type lasers were a pain. You'd try to shoot down an LAAT in a fast fighter, but once you got too close, you were shot down with friendly fire.
