I dunno. I think if you make something memorable, original and different from usual then you stand to make a good impact on the market. Like portal for example, bloody loved that game, played it round my friends house and it still stands as my number 1 puzzle game!

Portal was an original game but not an original idea. I bet many people thought portal took images from their minds. Making a portal gun is an obvious idea. About time it was done.

yeah, I've heard from friends who played it that it was awesome. Never found time to try it out myself though

When I bought the Orange Box I was so disappointed with Half Life 2 that Portal was even more awesome. The ending song is genius.

I'm 13, have a 98.25 average and I want to be a video game designer, even though everyone tells me to become a scientist.

A scientist is a fairly general career to be suggested. If you wanted to work with computers in a more study/independent way you could be a computer engineer, database developer, or a system analyst.
I'm not in the industry by any means, but if you want to pursue a career in gaming than I suggest the following:
- Have a extensive vocabulary and good communication skills - this can be achieved over time but is needed to accurately convey your ideas and explain a technical situation thoroughly
- Learn about all aspects of the industry - playing games are a great way to learn but don't forget about the other aspects as well. Did you know that Infinity Ward is having an ordeal right now? The PS3 clock glitch? RRoD? All good things to know to keep you up to date and informed (I suggest the G4 podcast "Feedback" which discusses in-depth about everything gaming)
- Pinpoint your interest and start to learn some now - If your interested in programming, why not try to learn a programming language? If art is more your thing, than download some editing tools and try to do some modeling. There's always something you can do to start now.
There's many more things to do that I'm sure a number of people on the forum could say but this is my advice to you. I, myself, attempt many of these things regularly and am stuck between game developer/programmer or a PhD in Computer Science. Good luck on you future endeavors!

I second Scott's ideas. Just be prepared and don't neglect to study.
