Hi there,
I just wanted to say I love the artwork you did on the assets for the Battlefront 3 project. I'm looking into getting into game design, and I'm a huge fan of Star Wars as well. The pictures you posted were pretty recent too, does that mean you're still working on the game? I'd love to see some more pictures of your work regarding the project, as well as maybe hear about your experiences working on it!

Thanks a lot, hope to hear back from you,

Alex

And here was his response, super quick!

Hey dude -
Thanks for the message. After Free Radical closed the project was handed to another developer without the game engine (That we owned) to be finished. I understand that company closed before it was completed.

Those images are pretty old and unfortunately for most of us who worked on that game we have very little to show for it now.

Still - almost everyone involved have moved onto bigger and better things. It's a hard industry to be in. Better start getting good fella :)

Chris

Interesting. It seems like he's either referring to Pandemic or Slant Six, both who were rumored to be working on the game after Free Rad. went under. I guess that means CrytekUK aren't making it :( Maybe LucasArts is doing it in-house...If anyone knows anything about game design, how long would it take to create a new engine but with all of the assets still intact?
Could you ask if he has any idea about Borman's footage?
like when it is from, if he ever saw it at that stage?

I'd rather not give the impression that I'm just an eager beaver trying to get the scoop on battlefront 3 :P But I think Borman clarified when that build came from, like April 2008 (and the leaked footage was 2009 I believe).

The build I had was from March 2008. PC build was at least a month ahead at most times. The build I had, according to a FRD employee, was about 5-6months from being the latest, which he knew due to the tutorial being implemented. No final voicework was recorded, although FRD employees did temp work. The script changed a lot apparently, especially as LA changed quite a bit.

I'm curious as to what your thoughts on the whole thing are Borman. Do you think the game you're playing is totally gone for good? Or do you think that that's the one we'll be seeing eventually but with changes? Who do you think has the game at this point? etc. etc.

FRD's game is gone, for sure. Assets were passed around a bit, hence why you saw Rebellion's PSP game, but could you imagine getting a game that is pretty darn similar to a PSP game in this day and age? Regardless of the fact that BF3 came before ES, people would be even more disappointed. Plus, development obviously wasn't all that smooth on BF3. We would have a Duke Nukem Forever situation on our hands if it played exactly like old leaked footage from years past. But the fact is, FRD's technology did die with them.

Now, is it possible that some similar features will be in BF3, should it come out? Sure. People were obviously excited about ground to space, for example, so there is a possibility of it being in the game. Now, whether or not it is, and whether or not it fits a new developer's gameplan is something totally different. Do I think the game is being worked on? I would hope so. But there is zero evidence that it is. I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but there simple isn't evidence of Battlefront 3 being worked on. Like I've said in the past, Lucasarts could be working on a new series, Jedi Knight, Republic Commando, or Battlefront, or something else entirely.

But nothing has been said to point to any of them in particular, so whatever you read, don't read into it. For the most part, PR people are pretty good, they know what they can and can't say. They also know how to do their job in hyping up a product, be it Battlefront 3, or Star Wars Kinect. They will be as vague as possible, and have you make assumptions to hype yourself up, and when you are wrong, it is all on you. PR people will because hype was built regardless.

I would like to think it is being worked on, since to me, and everyone else, it seems like a no-brainer, but times are tough, and a sure thing to 250,000 fans isn't a sure thing to a company with millions of dollars on the line. Game development costs keep going up, not down, so the risk is only going to be greater has time goes on.

Good points, and I agree with you. In fact they're probably just sitting back and enjoying all of the hype that BF3 is getting without them putting any effort into it. No need to pump oxygen onto a fire when there's already tons being thrown at it. It'd be nice if they gave some sort of hint, but we've heard nothing at all from LucasArts. As you said, there's zero evidence that the game is being worked on. We're all pretty much grasping at straws.
